General Stuff #461

Well this starts of with a pic circulating around Facebook that makes me chuckle quite a bit… The worse part is that I know people who’d probably do this… The type that would line tiles to the shape of the wall edge, not the perps etc.

Alienware have brought out an all new Desktop – the X51… and it’s a powerhouse of a machine, in fact if you want an over the counter Desktop, then I would seriously recommend these. Starting at an incredibly low £699 for Alienware X51 and rising to just under £1000 it comes packed with most high-end gaming things.. Like full Nvidia graphics, i3, i5 and i7 intel CPU’s, 1000gig HDD, and 8 gig of DDR3 ram… But that’s where the trouble starts.. You see while all components etc are designed as user upgradeable, the spec limits the Ram to 8gig… But for “Bang for Buck” off the shelf computing, it’d work in both the home gaming environment and serious office/professional use. And yep, it can sit vertically or horizontally and yes, the Alien head that lights up will turn,  so you can have the head the right way up as you need. But… you can still build the same or better yourself for the price. That said – it is a standard compact desktop unit (for Alienware - this is a near miracle) and these days, that is very welcome, not to mention near silent cooling. You will read of course – morons who call this “console” sized gaming – that’s because they don’t remember using a desktop… bless’em ;-)

It has not escaped some folks that I haven’t posted on Memphis and the overall US trip… don’t worry they’re coming! I know some of the things I have said in earlier posts have been a little harsh, but hey – if you smiled at any point then my job was done.

On that note, there are some upcoming changes to the blog… I, along with other blog cohorts have managed to work out a basic criteria for future posts and as such I will backward engineering these all the way back through the hundreds of already posted pieces.

Any way… In other news: Brother and sister actors Kate Hewlett  and Dave Hewlett  who came to fame as a duo in a Stargate Atlantis because of their perpetual and hilarious bickering, followed up with a global chat tour and the hilarious and exceptionally clever movie “A Dogs Breakfast”, have started doing small sketches over on David Hewlett’s “H0rrid” Youtube  account. So with that, I’ll leave you with a bit of inter sibling bashing

David Hewlett’s new blog

Actor, geek, nerd and former networks guy David Hewlett has a new BLOG. David who has apdgeekpeared in many TV shows and even wrote, directed and starred in the movie A Dog’s Breakfast, showing off his comedy skills and abilities has returned to the blogasphere with his typically named ‘dGeek’ trade mark over on typepad. David is keen to point out that it’s not in anyway a fansite (thank goodness) and more for his personal thoughts, musings and so on.

David was born here in old Blighty and moved to Canada at an early age before selling his soul in true turn-coat fashion, becoming a US Citizen. Married to a British belle, Jane Loughman, David and family are over in the UK at present visiting his outlaws.

Dr Who’s Easter Special

doctor-who-logo-2005

I’m NOT that bigger fan of Doctor Who, I always think there is something wrong with the way they actually put it together. There is certainly stuff wrong with the dialog, I mean what does “Maximum code red mean’? It’s stupid!! (‘Red’ is the maximum- derr!!). Yet the show is watched by far more adults than it is children. Furthermore, they always dumb down the soldiers etc. What I mean is, there are some areas they should try to make more plausible and realistic while the storyline does what a Dr.Who story lines does. Torchwood on the other hand, I just can’t stomach.

Today I watched what I believe is possibly the best Doctor Who production to date!!  The reason is that for the first michelle-ryantime we didn’t see a melancholic and whined at Doctor, no, what we had was the awesome actress Michelle Ryan bounce off his character and in turn the Doctor bounce off hers!!  Finally! they got it almost right!!! They got U.N.I.T. horrifically wrong as always but added the great Lee Evans as a boffin for comedic value – and what value it truly was – Brilliant!

Brilliant casting, because it has to be obvious by now how coolly Michelle Ryan played her part, that one day she’ll be a legend in her own right. She was certainly brilliant in the Bionic Woman.

Now, I don’t know what actors think or how they do what they do (it’s rocket science to me), I also don’t know what goes into writing and producing such things. You know, that amazing essence of creative brilliance that eludes most mortals like you and me.

david-tennantBut for heavens sake, they have the chance here to take a highly entertaining show and make not just a good show – but a truly great one!! For once the right two people were playing the right two roles – so BBC, pay Mr Tennant and Ms Ryan WHATEVER - IT - TAKES (take into account worldwide release and dvd sales), tighten up the dialog and make it more realistic, move to 22 episodes per year and lets see you turn this show into the greatest, most entertaining, most ‘real’ SciFi show in history… The revenue will be huge… so start thinking huge and wake Mr Tennant up about what he needs to be doing. After all, he is and will be known as the greatest Doctor ever, and if that isn’t typecasting – what is?

Yep, sign them up for 100 shows, make there relationship like the greatest pals ever, like two sides of the same coin, keep the spark there, but let them tease each other with others for fun yet be as tight as family – make them rock solid!!  Let them be a team, a joint force without the questions and doubts who rip each other with sarcasm at the end of each adventure. Let other peoples emotions not bother them, in fact keep the two charaters ‘meaningful’ NOT emotional. Then after 100 shows – kill them off and bring in your new Doctor… But not now!!! Or at least get David Hewlett on the job!!

To the BBC Wales team – well done! Very well done !!!

To Mr Tennant, you’re on a good one with this and you know it, but you’re man of you’re own mind and so it’d be up to you.

To Ms Ryan, everyone is going to want you back, but bigger things await you – I just hope they have the where with all to sign you up before it’s too late for them.

PS People often say that Doctor Who is supposed to be a little silly, have a dodgy set etc – well it’s easy to look back now at the early shows and laugh – but in it’s day, it was the height and limit of Special FX and everything.

The Hewlett’s are back

S40?!o the SGA series 5 start date is set for July 11 and the same wonderful bunch will be back doing the stuff they do – and, with a few newbies.

I was reading Dave Hewlett’s Blog over at dgeek and apparently we can look forward to his ‘work prolific’ sister Kate in the show again this season.

David is apparently suffering the effects of his 40th Birthday and as I know these effects well, some sympathy could have gone his way if we didn’t think he was actually older (lol sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Kate’s life seams to be a blur by all accounts and now has a spot on this years Toronto Fringe Festival in July. She also has a fascinating blog; Loft in Translation which makes for the very interesting reading for the life of a workaholic.

Personally I don’t know how people can cope with these two siblings – it’s exhuating just to read about them lol

The Hewlett Wrecking Crew are coming over to Blighty in June to publically take chunks out of each in the normal way that only family can and answer questions / meet and greet with fans, so do check the respective websites for further informaton.

This video is quite old and is typical Amanda Tapping vs David Hewlett banter – but can anyone please explain how the hell he and can talk so quickly – from a guy who gets complaints of perpetual mumbling (that’s me by the way), this is horrific stuff.
