I’m doing it :-(

decoratingSo the paint brushes are finally out and I’m painting ARRRGH!!

On top of this, hole diggingsome plaster has come off in the bathroom and the Gas board have turned up to replace the main feed to the property – so life has just got noisy and hectic. That said, I have finally met my new neighbour who seems alright.

Tonight I’m partaking of the Ale. Yes indeed, Dave who owns the Chip shop over the road is coming over at around 7:30pm and we’re off on a pub crawl around Honiton (if such a thing is possible)

Other stuff…EU elec results

The UK and most of Europe voted for new parliamentary persons the other day and I didn’t vote – If I had done, I’d have voted for UKip (UK Independence party) who are against our participation in the EU.
Strangely enough the Labour party (the present ruling UK govt.) got hammered!

The D-Day speeches….

What can I say? Canadian speech = Brilliant, US speech = very good, UK speech = not so much

The Fr**ch speech = OMG! WTF was that?… While it is nice for any country to be complimented – I thought Sarky Sarkosy was reaching for the KY!! Really, that was embarrassing! Even Michelle Obama started to look uncomfortable. Obama didn’t even have to try and walk away at the end of the ceremony – he just slid along on Fr**ch slime!!

LeadersYou see, according to all the nations that took part – it was a relative equal effort by all sides. From this there is a mutual respect for pulling off the impossible…. Even Obama said as much. But to the Fr**ch it was USA all the way.
I’d go as far to say, If that was how the Fr**ch truly felt – then why did we even bother.
2 of those nations could have done D-Day all on there own, but no one wanted to. And the worse part of the ceremony? The fact that the other nations that took part weren’t even there!

And just so we’re clear, in the greater war as a whole, it was Russia that got to Berlin first right.

But what I don’t understand (and Americans, please feel free to comment), is why oh why does a nation feel the need to impress another nation? America does not impress the Brits and the Brits don’t impress the USA. We work together from time to time – but there is a lot of sibling rivalry. Then Sarkosy can’t even speak to Obama in English when his nation was liberated by the predominantly English speaking nations of the world.

Mr Sarkosy – guess what you win this week!

And may I add, I really don’t know of anyone more deserving.

D-Day and Overlord moves to Neptune

d-day-beach from a german privateYep, today is indeed the 65th anniversary of this monumental military operation. However, I’m not actually thinking about that, because every time I read about the Normandy landings, the one thing that always strikes me are the numbers.

The shear volume of manpower is staggering, the object of course was to land, create a beach head then land enough kit and equipment to secure a major foothold from where they can begin to take back initially Fr**ce and then the rest of Europe.

But if someone even today said ‘I want to land 156,000 men on a coast and enough supplies and equipment to keep MulberryHarborthem going for a while’  – we would think they were insane! especially the part when they mention climb vertical cliffs, ariel and naval bombardment – oh and there would a very well entrenched group of thousands of machine gun nests firing back without rest.

Today, people talk about the loss and sacrifice of those troops – but they don’t mention how the losses effected the families left behind. Many thousands of women left without husbands and children left without a father. Not only this, but the Fr**ch suffered badly too.  As the Allies moved to take the city of Caen, the Germans left a great many snipers behind to thwart the allied advance. This they did – very successfully.  Caen, a busy northern with a large population Fr**ch city had almost been cut in two, Allies one side, D-Day Landings, Caen snipers the other and living in the whole thing were tens of thousands of Fr**ch civilians.

Now the Bombing of Caen started on D-Day, but when the Allies advanced the decision was taken to flatten the area of Caen where the German snipers were holed up – and boy did they flatten it! Thousands of civilians were killed and even today, many still hate the Allies for what they did (or rather, the RAF).

So what were the numbers? I remember once walking down a Normandy beach, the wreckage of the Mulberry Harbour sparsely strewn around the place trying mulberry_harboursto picture the scene, but could not – It’s simply not possible. Then it occurred to me I didn’t really know how many were actually involved.

So, here are the numbers, if not for your sake – then, my own…

On D-Day: 156,000 troops land in Normandy.

The American forces landed numbered 73,000
In the British and Canadian sector, 83,115 troops were landed
(61,715 of them British): 24,970 on Gold Beach, 21,400 on Juno Beach, 28,845 on Sword Beach, and 7900 airborne troops.
11,590 aircraft were available to support the landings.
On D-Day, Allied aircraft flew 14,674 sorties, and 127 were lost.

In the airborne landings on both flanks of the beaches, 2395 aircraft and 867 gliders of the RAF and USAAF were used on D-Day.

Operation Neptune involved huge naval forces, including 6939 vessels:
1213 naval combat ships, 4126 landing ships and landing craft, 736 ancillary craft and 864 merchant vessels.
Some 195,700 personnel were assigned to Operation Neptune: 52,889 US, 112,824 British, and 4988 from other Allied countries.

By the end of 11 June (D + 5),

326,547 troops,

54,186 vehicles

104,428 tons of supplies had been landed on the beaches.

D-Day anniversary anger?

1DDAYThere is talk about anger regarding the upcoming 65th Anniversary of D-Day, more over that no one thought to invite HM Queen Elizabeth to the party, the only living head of state that actually wore a uniform and worked for the war effort.

As such I have been reading various things around the Internet and blogashere that have not impressedStay Calm, Carry On me, yet there are many articles that have impressed me from nations like the USA.
Several things that are often said that really touch on a sore point with me are in regard to comments such as:
We came and saved your butts!
WE won the war!
 (often a US thing)
And the fact that many actually believe they came to war to stop the Holocaust!
So here are some facts – Britain had already fought her corner and had repelled and effectively won The Battle of Britain by the time our allies joined in.
No one really knew of the Holocaust until the very end of WW2.
If Britain hadn’t have been the only nation to stand up on her own and declare war – no one would have been along to stop the Holocaust at all!
WW2 for all it’s parts, took the relative equal involvement of all the nations involved, but one nation did lose and lose badly – Great Britain!
Marples night club, sheffield blitz. unknown number of deaths, only 70 bodies retrivedFor standing up and confronting the 3rd Reich initially on her own, the country was constantly hammered by German bombing, even my home town of Sheffield received no fewer than 22,625 bombs dropped on it, and yet SBlitz1heffield got away lightly compared to other cities.
So at the end of the war, this nation had given it’s all, it was completely bankrupt and food would carry on being rationed well into the 1950’s.

I’m actually smiling as I write this, the reason is simple – it’s all being organised by the Fr**ch! ;-)

So with the news that our Liz is not invited to the party, I recently wrote this piece on the American Princess’s blog – I have now taken the time to clean it up a little.

Presidents come anPrincLizd go,  HM, does not. How many heads of state would give up there status and become a mechanic or a truck driver? How many of us would do the same? How many of us had our houses bombed? (then) HRH did.

But, these days modern politicians seem to think the past no longer shapes the future – especially where personal commitment is concerned. Far worse affronts have happened to the crown and the UK – like the invasion of Grenada.
The US of course was born from the rejection of Royal tyranny – yet HM is no tyrant.
An Irony is that Obama himself was born a Royal Subject under HM Queen Elizabeth.

HM is the head of state of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, where she is represented by Governors-General.
Further to these countries, she is also the head of the Commonwealth which include;
Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei Darussalam, Cameroon, Canada, Cyprus, Dominica, Fiji Islands, The Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea ,Samoa, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Swaziland, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, United Kingdom, United Republic of Tanzania, Vanuatu, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.docks-londonblitz

She still carries significant power which she used a little of last year by suspending the Canadian Government. Indeed, she can sack any of her governments and bring all her nations to war at any time if she so desires.
And with that level of power, you begin to understand the level of her reserved nature, not to mention the responsibility that comes with it.
Even in the UK, where many sometimes become vocal in questioning her role, they will still all come together in her protection because in essence, she signifies what we went to war for, she represents the true essence of democracy and even the basis of the American way of life.

Simply there is always something greater than yourself to believe in and fight for; your flag, head of state or simply the freedom that is our way of life.
What I’m saying is, we all have that rally point, that thing that drives us from within, that we don’t have to shout about – for us and the rest of those listed nations, it is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

So Mr Sarkozy, all is fair in love and war they say, so as we and the rest of the allies once came to Fr**nce together before – and back then we really did Come, we saw and we…..

It must be nice to be able to pick and choose whoever you want to thank. Yes, Brown and Prince Charles will turn up – only because the beer is free, it is free right? and Obama has to come along to satisfy you’re freakish ‘man-love’ for him

Britain dislikes you just as much as ever – but these days, it’s by your own doing. Nevertheless, do please have a great day, remember it however you wish – as I’m sure you will.
