First up Actor Richard Todd…
I don’t know where to begin with this guy, my ex-wife’s uncle knew him from serving with the Parachute Regt during WW2 and ever since learning of his exploits, I’ve had a real respect for the him.
In the movie ‘The Longest Day’, Richard commands a unit who glide into Fr**ce and take the Pegasus Bridge southeast of Caen just after midnight on the 6th June, D-Day. This was the exact same
operation he did for real all those years ago – albeit, he wasn’t the commanding officer back then.
The bridge itself was renamed the Pegasus Bridge by the Fr**ch in honour of both the regiment and it becoming the first place in Fr**ce to be liberated. If you click on this 1944 photo below, you can see the bridge and see just how close they landed in the background. The Germans never even heard them coming as the three 7 ton gliders descended, landing right next to the bridge. Thus securing the eastern flank for Operation Overlord.
Richard Todd went on to star in some old greats too like ‘The Dambusters’ etc.
While it is a loss, I can’t help but say a word of thanks for the guy, who not only took part in real life operations, but brought his knowledge and insight to the silver screen to make movies so much more realistic. I wonder if there was ever time for him to suffer Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, seeing as he spent an early career re-enacting the war!
Richard Todd died yesterday aged 90.
UFO Dept…
The other bit of info regarding the passing of something is the British MoD (ministry of defence) has finally shut down
it’s UFO investigation branch. In doing so they claim to have saved £44,000 and moved the single officer to another department. This is the front end of this subject and several years ago the MoD made a press announcement saying that “While it recognised the existence of
UFO’s, it did not at this time deem them a threat”. This roughly translated means – ‘we don’t have missiles fast enough!!’.
So what do the two other guys do at Rudloe Manor then, the ones that only talk to military personnel?
